Julian Aldag

Julian Aldag grew up studying gymnastics in Adelaide before moving to Melbourne to study the three year Bachelor of Circus Arts course at NICA.  He graduated from the course in 2009 at age 23.

Julian specialises in Corde Lisse, a single vertical rope which he climbs and drops from in numerous ways. He has mastered the pirouette on rope: a daring performance which involves releasing the rope, spinning 360 degrees in mid air and then catching the rope again.

Within a year of graduating from NICA Julian had already made himself known as one of Australia’s most exciting circus acts, having competed at the 12th Latina International Circus Festival in Italy and been acknowledged with a Cirque du Soleil award for innovative artistic vision and performance.

  • In 2010 Julian performed in Le Grand Cirque displaying his skills as a solo act on the vertical rope. This was the first time that the show - which has been seen by millions all over the world - had come to Melbourne, and Julian was the only Australian performer. “It’s a really great step for Australian circus,” says Julian.

Julian has an extensive list of achievements which include performing in the Walking Whale Circus and NICA ensemble productions, Do Not Pass Go and At First Sight. He has also had the honour of becoming a Moscow Circus Festival Bronze Medalist with the duo act Memento in 2009 – before he had even graduated - as well as being one of the first Australians to be invited to perform at the 4th World Festival of Circus Art in Moscow. He describes this opportunity as “an extremely valuable experience”.
